Survey Consultation on 2024 Rome Civil Society Declaration on SDG16+

    Hello there everyone,

It was lovely to see a lot of you in our roundtable yesterday, led by Ernest Nyimai from NANGO - an excellent presentation and some great discussion that we'll be seeking to continue next week with our follow up post.

We've received the communication below from the OECD DAC CSO Reference Group seeking contributions from Civil Society Organizations to provide 'crucial insights and recommendations' for the 2024 SDG16 Conference, to be held in New York on Monday 6 May 2024.

The full message is below, and I know your contributions would be greatly valued and would make up a substantial part of the final resource.

Don't hesitate to reach out with questions if you have any!

Thank you for your attention and have a lovely weekend.

    ---

    Dear colleagues,

We are excited to share with you a survey consultation to gather proposals and recommendations from civil society partners working around SDG16+, to contribute to the drafting of the new forthcoming advocacy resource, the "2024 Rome Civil Society Declaration on SDG16+". The survey is now open for contributions in 3 languages (English, Spanish, and French), so please share widely with your partners and networks!

With SDG16 under review at the 2024 High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF), this Rome Declaration will provide an opportunity for civil society to contribute critical insights and recommendations that can contribute to this review, and will serve as an important resource that will input into the 2024 SDG16 Conference, to be held in New York on Monday 6 May 2024. The drafting of this advocacy resource seeks to build upon and constitute an addendum to the previous three versions of the Rome Civil Society Declaration on SDG16+, and will look to identify areas where amplified actions to safeguard commitments are needed to further support for implementation and accountability of SDG16+ in 2024 and beyond.

Contribute to the"2024 Rome Civil Society Declaration on SDG16+":

Deadline for Inputs: Wednesday, 27 March 2024

Following submission of written inputs, we will host a virtual consultation on a preliminary draft via Zoom on 10 April 2024 at 9AM ET / 3PM CET. Register here for the virtual consultation: https://bit.ly/3PhLvXM

    Background:

In 2019, SDG16 was reviewed for the first time at the UN High-Level Political Forum 2019 (HPLF), marking the need for civil society to come together in order to update on the (lack of) progress towards the achievement of SDG16 and to share recommendations in the 2019 Rome Civil Society Declaration on SDG16+. The 2019 Declaration "Amplified Commitments and Partnerships for Accelerated Action: Rome Civil Society Declaration on SDG16+" received endorsement from over 130 civil society organizations and networks. As SDG16 was reviewed for the second time at UN HPLF 2021, the Rome Declaration was revisited in 2021. The Rome Declaration 2.0 "A Renewed Call for Strengthening Commitments, Partnerships, and Accelerated Action for SDG16+" was endorsed by 215+ civil society stakeholders, and looked specifically at the impacts of COVID-19 on the promotion of just, peaceful and inclusive societies. In 2022, The Rome Declaration, "SDG16+ in Peril: An urgent call-to-action for safeguarding commitments to Peaceful, Just and Inclusive Societies" was endorsed by over 130 civil society organizations. The Rome Declaration was further expanded upon through the 2023 "Rome Declaration on SDG16+: An urgent call for transformative SDG16+ commitments at the midpoint of the 2030 Agenda".

    Why is it relevant now?

In 2024, further inputs from civil society are required to update the previous versions of the Declaration, in light of the backsliding on SDG16+, and the opportunity provided for the thematic review of SDG16 at the 2024 HLPF. Additionally, the upcoming Summit of the Future and its corresponding "Pact for the Future" provide many links to SDG16+ issues around peace, global governance and strengthening of institutions.

Please don't hesitate to reach out with any questions. We look forward to working with you on this advocacy resource!
