PMD Pro 1 is a four day introduction to project management course for NGOs.  The training focuses on the way we work, and the course covers the basic concepts, terminology, and tools of project management as used by NGOs.  You will learn how to plan, implement, evaluate, and accomplish your work effectively and efficiently.

In the NGO world, most of our work is structured as a project or series of projects, with a prescribed beginning, middle, and end. NGO staff - whether programmatic or operational - are asked to use limited resources to define and set goals, organize, plan, and manage the project work, and deliver on time and on budget. The skills necessary to accomplish these goals are often complicated by the unique business culture of the nonprofit, including funding cycles, corporate policies, frameworks and metrics, time zone differences, and variable staff skills. Our managers come to the table as “content experts” but may not have the necessary project management skills to achieve all of the project goals and objectives.

The course is assessed by a one hour, closed book, multiple choice exam. The exam tests participants’ knowledge and comprehension of the key ideas covered in the course and confers a PMD Pro 1 certification on those passing the written exam. The credential is a globally-recognized certification for project managers. 

The PMD Pro1 Training is intended for a variety of NGO staff:
  • Individuals new to project management
  • Individuals experienced working in project-based environments who are looking for a refresher
  • Experienced project managers who are new to working in the international development sector

Those taking the PMD Pro 1 Training can expect to:

  • Learn the key elements of project management across the full lifecycle of the project
  • Practice the sequence of steps necessary for successful project management
  • Understand key project roles & responsibilities and the importance of planning and collaboration in project management
  • Gain practical experience using project management tools, templates, and methodologies
  • Learn how NGO business process impacts the project plan

PMD Pro 1 is the first of a three-level training curriculum that confers professional certifications appropriate to professionals working in the NGO sector.  PMD Pro 1 was developed under the PM4NGOs initiative in collaboration with LINGOS.

To take the PMD Pro 1 certification Exam, please note that you will need to bring a laptop with the ability to connect to wi-fi on the day of the exam (the last day of the workshop).  Also note that the test does not run on Internet Explorer Version 9.  Older versions of Internet Explorer and all other browsers (Mozilla Firefox, Chrome, etc.) work to take the test.
